Four Things You Can Do Right Now To Increase The Nutrition Of Your Dog's Kibble
Not quite ready to make the switch to a freshly cooked or raw diet for you dog? Here are 4 things you can do right now, to add tons of extra nutrition to your dog's kibble. Simply doing these four things will turn kibble into a nutrition powerhouse meal for your dog, and can add years to his or her life!
1. Add Digestive Enzymes
The process of making kibble destroys the natural enzymes contained in the ingredients. Adding enzymes can greatly improve digestibility and promote excellent gut health. I recommend using Zesty Paws Probiotic for Dogs because I have been using products from this company for years. They are the high quality probiotics in a convenient bite size chew, with a taste that dogs love! Live probiotics help to replenish beneficial bacteria in the digestive tract depleted by stress or antibiotic therapy. So, even if you do feed a raw or gently cooked diet to your dogs, giving probiotics can also be beneficial. I keep these bites on hand and include them into my dog's raw meals a few times a week.
2. Include Oils To Provide Essential Fatty Acids.
Fish oil is beneficial to all dogs because it contains essential fatty acids known as EPA and DHA that help to strengthen the immune system, improve inflammatory conditions like allergies and arthritis, beautify the skin and coat, and help in brain development and brain health. I include fish oil or Salmon oil in my dog's raw diet every day. Zesty Paws Pure Wild Alaskan Salmon Oil is another great product that I use for adding fish oil into my dogs' diet.
3. Add Goat's Milk, Cottage Cheese, Yogurt, or Canned Fish.
Dogs enjoy and thrive on extra protein. Cultured dairy proteins and canned mackerel, sardines, or salmon are both good options, and provide additional vitamin D to your dog's diet. I feed canned, unsalted sardines to my dogs every day. they love them so much! And I feel so good about feeding them because sardines are little powerhouse nutrition shots for dogs and for humans. My go-to brand of sardines are the Wild Planet No Salt Sardines packed in water.
4. Include Dried Kelp Once A Day For A Healthy Thyroid
Kelp's minerals and vitamins are beneficial to your pet in several ways:
Regulates thyroid, pituitary, and adrenal gland activity.
It reduces inflammation and itching, making it useful for dogs with skin allergies.
It contains 21 amino acids and is 25 percent protein.
The iodine content aids thyroid function. This increases weight loss and metabolism. It's easy to digest and high in fiber
Tartar and dental plaque are both reduced by the alginic acid found in kelp
Kelp is naturally high in iodine, a key nutrient required for glandular function, and it supports the thyroid, pituitary, and especially the adrenal gland.
Vitamins A, B12, C, and E are abundant in kelp. It also has iron and trace minerals like calcium, potassium, and boron.
Kelp promotes digestive health by acting as a prebiotic and modulating the gut microbial population, as well as providing dietary fiber that promotes the growth, diversity, and activity of beneficial bacteria while decreasing pathogens.
The GI tract contains approximately 70% of a dog's immune system, and sea kelp is a direct contributor to a strong immune response as well as a contributor to negative bacteria control.
The bioactive molecules in kelp help to reduce the negative effects of stress and protect the proteins that regulate metabolism. This also aids the pet in better temperature regulation and reduces the likelihood of heat-related illness.
Soluble fiber, calcium, potassium, iron, boron, and vitamins A, B12, C, and E, found in kelp all work together to provide these benefits. I have been using Life Line Organic Icelandic Kelp for years, and it's something I swear by in regards to the effectiveness and benefit to my dogs' health and wellness.
